OOC Name: Josh Age: 22 AIM/Y!M: jtimothyy at AIM, and radiofreej at YIM Timezone: USA Central
IC Full Name: Caradoc Rhys Dearborn Nicknames: Doc, Doctor Dearborn, Doccy Age: 32 Birthday: April 21, 1956 House/Year: Ravenclaw/Class of 1974 Occupation: Officially, an accomplished and respected official in the Research and Development branch of the Department of Unspeakables. Unofficially, a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Sexuality: Straight. Martial Status: Single and looking.
Immediate Family: Andrew Dearborn (father), Isabelle Dearborn (mother). Blood Status: Halfblood. He's the son of a muggle mother and wizard father. Loyalty/Alliance: Dumbledore and the Order. Role in the war: A spy in the Ministry, trying to ferret out who was on which side. Also, his work tended to take him abroad to some very interesting places, where he was prone to do a bit of research and reconnaissance for the Order on the side.
Full Personality: Caradoc is, above anything else, a man of many levels. On the surface he’s a great guy to get to know, full of jokes and chatter and life. He was always a sociable child, wanting plenty of attention and friends. He’s always there to take you out to the pub, laugh at your jokes, and talk your ear off about anything you might want to hear about, and quite a few things you might not. He has many friends, with whom he keeps up regularly, and his boundless energy means he usually manages to juggle his work and his many hobbies - reading, writing, singing in a community choir in the muggle neighborhood of Sheffield he currently lives in. He’s got a thing for rock and roll, and has a surprisingly large collection of muggle records and compact discs.
Then there’s his work persona. The energy is still there, and the ability to get along with people easily, but it’s tempered by a strong work ethic. This Caradoc will be the first to arrive and the last to leave, and will bend every ounce of willpower he has towards getting the job done. And get it done he does - over the years Dearborn has developed a reputation for being able to work out complicated problems and locate hard to find data. Co - workers tend to find him polite and a big help, but stiff and hard to get to know.
And then there’s the level that most people never get to know - the Caradoc who is capable of lying even to his friends and loved ones, and is capable of keeping secrets for years. It was this tendency that inspired Dumbledore to put him to work as a spy. He was a natural for the job; even most of his fellow Order members don’t know exactly how much he does or how much he knows about the secret goings on at the Ministry. It can sometimes put a strain on his relationships, though. He’s so used to keeping secrets that he sometimes lies and hides things for no good reason, which can anger his friends when they find out.
Appearance: Tall, gangly and dark haired. Caradoc’s always had a rather sharp face, and his habit of working through meals keeps him very skinny even though he was never one for sports or any other kind of outdoor activities. He’s not altogether unattractive, although some might find him a little to sharp and thin for their tastes. His hair is always messy, and he usually does very little to tame it; there’s usually a hint of stubble on his chin as well. His eyes are just as dark and his hair, and are always alive with energy. His taste in clothing tends towards muggle suits and t-shirts, only wearing robes on the job or at Wizarding society functions.
Desired PB: Eion Bailey
History: Isabelle Roberts and Andrew Dearborn would have never met if it hadn’t been for the crup. Andrew, a Welsh wizard and Ravenclaw alumnus who had set up a fairly successful magical veterinary shop, had in an uncharacteristic bout of absentmindedness allowed a couple of magical creatures under his care to escape. His desperate search took him all through his adopted town of Sheffield, and when he finally tracked down the last crup it was being cooed over by a pretty girl in a secluded corner of a city park. Desperate to control the mistake, but unwilling to put the girl under a memory charm, he introduced himself and promised to explain exactly what kind of animal the girl was holding over dinner.
They were married eleven months later.
Caradoc was their first and only child, a rambunctious boy with an overactive imagination who always wanted friends and attention. He did reasonably well at the Muggle school he attended until he was ten, with his father home schooling him in the basics of magic and always making sure he was aware of his dual heritage. Despite the strain of knowing he was different from the other children his age, he was always able to fit in decently well, and have a decently sized group of friends and acquaintances . His arrival at Hogwarts sixth months after his eleventh birthday did nothing at all to change that. Sorted into his father’s house, he quickly learned the social ins and outs of his house, making several close friends and even more acquaintances while doing his best to keep up his house’s reputation of academic excellence. He did very well in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Astronomy, Arithmancy, and Transfiguration, was decent at Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures, and diffident at best at Divination. The charms of Quidditch were always a mystery to him, as was the appeal of flying in general (he was thrilled when he finally learned to Apparate), but he made sure to come to all of Ravenclaw’s games and cheer on his friends as loud as he could.
Upon graduation Caradoc was at a bit of a loss. There were a lot of things he was interested in doing, but nothing that stood out from the rest as really worth his time and devotion. He was pointed by Professor McGonagall towards the Ministry, and more specifically towards the Unspeakables. It turned out to be a good choice; Caradoc flourished in the demanding but exciting environment and became known for his devotion to his work. He was soon given a position in the Research and Development department, working on esoteric new magical theories and recovery of unclassified artifacts.
When the war broke out, Dumbledore approached him to offer him a place in the newly formed Order of the Phoenix. Caradoc accepted immediately, and began working as the Order’s plant in the Ministry, searching for evidence of Voldemort sympathy amongst his co - workers. His work involved a lot of travel, and during such trips he would often take detours to do some investigation or recruiting for the Order. When the Death Eaters were driven out of England at last, Caradoc breathed a sigh of relief and went back to his daily life, content to be left in peace with his muggle life and fascinating job.
